☆ Supreme Court set to hear Trump challenge to Colorado ballot ban that cited 'insurrection'

Six Republican and unaffiliated voters in Colorado had filed the lawsuit that led to the state Supreme Court ruling. Grimsley predicted that claim will be closely scrutinized by the Supreme Court justices during oral arguments. "I think the justices will be very interested in that question, if only because President or former President Trump has made that the lead argument in this case," Grimsley said. Three of the nine Supreme Court justices who will hear his appeal Thursday were appointed by Trump — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. Three other justices who were appointed by Republican presidents with Trump's appointees comprise a conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Coming off back-to-back losing seasons, Florida coach Billy Napier needed to make changes. Napier hired a “head coach of the defense,” an “expert in the special teams space” and a new strength and conditioning coordinator during the past two months. Napier and the Gators are counting on all the new faces making a huge difference this fall. Napier could give up play-calling duties for the first time in seven seasons as a head coach. His offense was inconsistent, his defense was historically woeful and his special teams units provided more head-scratching moments than game-changing momentum.

All those late coaching moves added some intrigue to the first Wednesday of February, a day that once highlighted the recruiting calendar but has been anti-climactic ever since the 2017 launch of a December signing period. New coaches had to re-recruit prospects who had signed to play for a different staff and now were free to look elsewhere. So did Brent Brennan, who left San Jose State to take over for Fisch at Arizona. Washington refortified its class by adding about several players who originally had signed to play for Fisch at Arizona. Alabama also lost cornerback Jameer Grimsley, who signed with the Tide in December but will now play at Florida instead.

Mitchell joined the case on behalf of Trump around the time arguments were underway at the Colorado Supreme Court. Georgetown’s Supreme Court Institute, for instance, relies heavily on attorneys who have served in the US solicitor general’s office, the government’s top lawyers before the Supreme Court. (The Institute, which operates on a non-partisan basis and offers its sessions for free, declined to comment on the Trump case arrangement.) Particularly valuable for any moot court, along with former members of the solicitor general’s office, are former Supreme Court law clerks. In that November 2021 controversy, the Supreme Court allowed Mitchell 10 minutes as an an intervenor on the Texas side.

CNN —As Donald Trump wages a Supreme Court battle to stay on state presidential ballots, a potent contingent of the conservative legal world has united behind him. The new filings in the case of Trump v. Anderson also reinforce the tight world of Supreme Court lawyering. From the start, the Colorado voters trying to keep Trump off the ballot, and who won at the state Supreme Court level, have been represented by former US Supreme Court clerks who’ve become prominent advocates. CNN —A Colorado judge has ruled that former President Donald Trump “engaged in an insurrection” on January 6, 2021, but rejected an attempt to remove him from the state’s 2024 primary ballot, finding that the 14th Amendment’s “insurrectionist ban” doesn’t apply to presidents. ‘Trump engaged in an insurrection’In her ruling, Wallace agreed with almost everything that the challengers argued, except on the critical question of whether a president can be disqualified by the 14th Amendment. Scott Gessler, a former Colorado secretary of state representing Trump in the case, opposed it. He said a protective order was unnecessary because threats and intimidation already are prohibited by law. The issue is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court, which has never ruled on the insurrection provision in section three of the 14th Amendment. A parallel case in Minnesota filed by another well-financed liberal group is scheduled to be heard by that state's supreme court on Nov. 2. Sean Grimsley, an attorney for the plaintiffs in the case, proposed the protective order in court Friday.
